toddler favorites

rowan changes his mind constantly (he’s two, that’s how it should be) - between what to eat, what to wear, or what to play he’s always keeping us on our toes. with that said, he has developed a core set of “favorites” in almost every category. this mini-series about his favorites is intended to spark gift ideas or every day excitement for toddlers in your lives. once charlotte is old enough, i’ll divide these posts into a his and hers section.

for now, let’s start with some of his favorite books at 2.5 years old, summer 2021.

animals & insects

mother bruce

one of his earliest books and earliest favorites (see how he “talk” to Bruce in his crib here). every time i put this book back on his closet shelf, it almost immediately returns. this tried and true favorite is about a bear mistaken by goslings as their mother and how he handles his new responsibilities.

we do not eat our classmates

another one from Ryan Higgins, Penelope Rex (a little dinosaur) starts school only to find her classmates are all children. this story is darling and a bedtime favorite. he tends to read it during quiet time on his own too.

tuesday

there are only a handful of words in this book but filled with gorgeous images of frogs and their adventure one tuesday evening. this is a greta book because as the reader, you can make the story as long or as short as you need to - plus rowan can “read” simply by looking at the pictures

miss spider’s tea party

this book was mine as a child and rowan recently discovered it when i tried to put it in charlotte’s room for future reading. he has since claimed it as his own and we read it multiple times a week. this book has colorful pictures, shows that not all spiders are scary and teaches littles how to count.

transportation

cars and trucks and things that go

what little doesn’t love things with wheels. this book is incredibly long, with winding words that dance all over the pages, but can keep their interest for so long! the creativity of Richard Scarry’s vehicles is charming and will most likely be a long time favorite for ro. tip for reading at bedtime: point out a couple favorite vehicles on every few pages and skip the story all together, otherwise you’ll be there all night.

steam train, dream train

a random purchase made on a beach vacation, this book has been read cover to cover until the pages have torn. nothing a little tape can’t fix. this one goes to bed with rowan most nights and he’s memorized the rhyme. this one teaches kids the names of the various train cars and their purpose in a fun way.

these books are so fun to read as a family before bedtime or alone when he’s having quiet time. he even loves to read them to little sister.

are any of these your toddlers favorite? which do you find yourself reaching for over and over?
